On the afternoon of July 18, the Launching Ceremony of the 4th Malaysia "Chinese-Malay" Translation Competition, co-hosted by NCWU and University College of Technology Sarawak, was held online simultaneously in Zhengzhou, China, and Sibu, Malaysia. Tang Jing, Education Secretary of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Malaysia, Wang Shijia, Deputy Secretary of the School of International Education of NCWU, Zhou Yantao, Deputy Dean of the School of International Education of NCWU, Huang Shengxin, Foreign Dean of the Confucius Institute, Han Fule, Candidate Chinese Dean, as well as representatives of teachers and students from universities in China and Malaysia attended the event.
In his speech, Zhou Yantao stated that as a signature event meticulously crafted by the Confucius Institute at University College of Technology Sarawak, the "Chinese-Malay" Translation Competition had become an important platform for promoting language learning and cultural understanding since its establishment in 2022. In recent years, NCWU has co-founded the Confucius Institute with the University College of Technology Sarawak, achieving remarkable results in Chinese teaching and cultural exchanges. Last month, more than 10 teachers and students from the University College of Technology Sarawak participated in the "Witnessing the Yellow River, Appreciating the Central Plains" Chinese Bridge Summer Camp at NCWU, engaging in in-class Chinese learning and site visits to the Yellow River culture, which made for a fulfilling and unforgettable experience. He expressed his expectation that the Confucius Institute would continue to create more high-quality competitions and signature activities to further expand the breadth and depth of cultural and educational exchanges between China and Malaysia.
Huang Shengxin noted in his speech that Malay and Chinese, respectively, carry the cultural wisdom and national spirit of the two countries' long-standing civilizations. Translation is not only a conversion of words, but also an exchange of understanding, cognition, and values. The competition would build a platform for language enthusiasts to communicate and learn from each other, helping to cultivate young talents with cross-cultural communication capabilities. He expressed his delight at the enthusiastic participation of nearly 400 Malaysian students and encouraged them to enhance their abilities and broaden their horizons through the competition.
Tang Jing pointed out in his speech that the translation competition is a vivid manifestation of implementing the strategic consensus of the leaders of China and Malaysia and deepening cultural and educational exchanges. He reviewed the important achievements of President Xi Jinping's visit to Malaysia in April this year, and emphasized that the mutual translation between Chinese and Malay is not only a language connection, but also a cultural mutual learning. He encouraged young contestants to cherish the beauty of languages, temper their professional skills, bravely shoulder the mission of communication, and become bridges and bonds for friendly exchanges between China and Malaysia.
At the end of the ceremony, the participants took a group photo online, marking the official launch of the 4th "Chinese-Malay" Translation Competition.
It is reported that the "Chinese-Malay" Translation Competition has been held for three consecutive sessions since its establishment. On the basis of previous sessions, this year's competition will further expand its participation and influence, continuing to promote the in-depth development of cultural and educational cooperation between China and Malaysia.
