On May 10, the NCWU Confucius Institute held the NCWU-UTS Youth Forum VII titled “Innovative Opportunities and Ethical Challenges in the Era of AI”. 12 young students from NCWU and the University of Technology Sarawak exchanged their thoughts and shared their experiences online during this forum. Vice Dean Zhou Yantao of the School of International Education, foreign Dean Huang Shengxin and Chinese Dean Han Mengqi of the Confucius Institute, and assigned teacher Mu Zhigang attended this forum.

Huang Shengxin stated that the future of AI belonged not only to laboratories and engineers, but also to every youth eager to ask questions and practice. He hoped that this forum could provide students with an open and inclusive exchange platform and bring more potential to AI development.

Zhou Yantao noted that AI is transforming our society at an unprecedented speed. He pointed out that this forum offered not only academic exchanges, but also intellectual inspirations. He hoped that the Confucius Institute could build more exchange platforms for Chinese and Malaysian youth to enhance their communication and understanding, and the NCWU-UTS Youth Forum, supported by multiple parties, could be conducted in more forms and with more wonderful content.

During this forum, the students delivered presentations with a focus on application innovation and ethical review of AI technology, reflecting their multi-dimensional and cross-cultural exchanges and profound engagement. These presentations covered a number of practical topics, including “AI and Privacy Protection - Crisis of Confidence in the Era of Data”, “Transformation and Ethical Arguments of AI in Clinical Diagnosis”, and “Innovative Practice of Multilingual Travel AI Assistant”, and fully reflected the high attention of young students to the integration of technology and humanities. During the exchanges, the students not only presented their understanding of advanced AI technologies, but also coped with the ethical issues underlying the technologies bravely. During the evaluation, Mu Zhigang fully acknowledged the students’ creativity and expression, and put forward advice on the specific shortcomings.

Since its establishment in 2021, the NCWU-UTS Youth Forum has become a brand program of the NCWU Confucius Institute. With the deepening of humanistic education exchanges between China and Malaysia, this forum not only enhanced the exchanges between the two universities but also fostered the understanding and communication between Chinese and Malaysian youth.
