The international course “Water and Civilization” was launched in March 2026, bringing together more than 20 distinguished experts from leading universities and research institutions worldwide. Delivered through an integrated online and offline teaching model, the course explores the profound relationship between water and human civilization.
Taught entirely in English, the course is supported by an Executive Committee and an Advisory Committee composed of scholars and experts with international experience in water-related research, education and governance.
Designed as a general course for first- and second-year undergraduate students, “Water and Civilization” integrates AI-powered teaching tools and interdisciplinary learning methods. The course guides students in understanding the relationship between water and human civilization from multiple perspectives, including hydrology, history, geography, technology, governance and culture.
Course topics range from the origins of river civilizations and transboundary water cooperation to water security under climate change and smart water management practices. The course consists of ten core modules: Water Cycle, Water–Civilization Nexus, Water Issues and Water Needs, Hydropower, Water Footprint, Competition for Water, Water Economics, Water Markets, Water Management, and the Future of Water.
Since its launch, the course has attracted strong interest among undergraduate students, who have actively participated in discussions on water security, ecological sustainability and global environmental challenges. Through the course, students are developing interdisciplinary knowledge of water resources, ecological restoration, climate resilience and the role of water in sustainable human and environmental development.
