Master Program for International Students in Computer Science and Technology

1、Training Mode


Foreign master candidates can be trained under supervisor responsibility system or guided by an instructor group, or jointly fostered by recruited experts outside the university and mentors inside the university.


2、Curriculum Settings and Credit


Curriculum includes theoretical courses and practices. Theoretical courses are divided into degree course and non-degree course.

The degree courses include public compulsory courses, basic theoretical courses, and professional basic courses. Public compulsory courses are given to all students. Basic theoretical courses and professional basic courses are chosen under the  guidance of supervisors integrating research direction. The degree courses require no less than 22 credits, practices of 4 credits, and a total of not less than 42 credits.


Non-degree courses include public elective courses and elective courses for major. The total credit of elective courses is not less than 16 credits.

Master candidates scored 75 will pass the degree courses and scored 60 pass non-degree courses.


The practices include thesis proposal, academic activities and intensive reading of specialty foreign literature, totaling 4 credits.


1. Academic activities. The students must participate in 6 academic activities and more within 2 years, including delivering 1 academic report and more and completing summary report of no less than 500 words each time for supervisor to give grades. All qualified grades are counted as 1 credit.


2. Thesis proposal. The thesis proposal should be completed at the end of the third semester, and examined and approved by the tutor and the discipline department, and 1 credit will be completed.


3. Intensive reading of specialty foreign literature. The graduate should read 10 excellent specialized foreign literatures, designed by the tutor, published in foreign authoritative journals in recent years, write a reading report, and translate not less than 5 of them into Chinese. The graduate should submit them to the tutor for evaluation in the mid-term examination stage. All qualified grades are counted as 2 credits.


3、Dissertation


The dissertation is an important part of postgraduate cultivation and the comprehensive training for postgraduates to carry out scientific research or undertake specialized technical work. It is the main part to cultivate the postgraduates' innovative ability and the ability to comprehensively apply the knowledge they have learned to discovering, analyzing and solving problems. The dissertation work  includes the thesis proposal, the thesis improvement, the thesis review and the defense, etc. Assessment of master candidates' thesis is performed by the university.


1. Proposal: The thesis proposal is an important part of the postgraduates' dissertation. The master candidates must make a thesis proposal before writing the dissertation. The main contents of the thesis proposal include the theoretical basis, the research content of the subject, the expected objectives or results, the research methods to be adopted, the technical route, the experimental scheme and  the feasibility analysis, and the theoretical study, data access, and work basis related to  the research.


2. Thesis requirements: the topic should come from engineering practice or specific background of scientific research and engineering technology, and reflect the author's ability to solve scientific or engineering technical problems by  comprehensive application of scientific theory, methods and technical means, and have a certain theoretical basis. The thesis should have certain academic value or practical value in national economic construction, and should have some new ideas and contents.


The thesis shall be written in accordance with the requirements and format of a thesis. The thesis should have clear concept, reliable argument, rigorous analysis, true data and clear text. The number of words in the thesis is generally not less than 20,000. The Chinese and English abstracts are about 1,000 words. The references and bibliographies are included.


3. Scientific research: Master's candidates shall be qualified to applying for a master degree with achieved research achievements during the studies. According to the real needs, candidates can participate in the supervisor's subject research in all research fields, attend relevant academic meetings, take investigation and survey on business trips and collect materials. Before applying for a degree, the candidates is required to publish at least one paper (the student is the first author or the supervisor  is the first author while the student takes the second place) on academic journals at home and abroad or graduates academic forum excellent dissertation collections, with "North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power" as first college undersigned.


4. Review and defense

(1)The review of dissertation should focus on reviewing the author's ability to solve practical problems through comprehensive application of scientific theory, methods and technical means; the technical difficulty and workload of dissertation work; and the new ideas, methods and progress of solving practical problems; advancement and practicability of its new process, technology and design;


(2)Master candidates must complete all parts stipulated in the training program and pass all the examinations before applying for a thesis defense;


(3) Two peer experts are required to review the dissertation. The Defense Committee shall be composed of no less than 5 experts; the reviewers and committee members shall be experts with senior professional titles and taking the post in teaching, research and engineering design departments of the industry.
