NCWU President Liu Junguo Attends the 3rd Asia International Water Week

From September 23 to 28, the 3rd Asia International Water Week (AIWW) convened in Beijing under the theme "Enhancing Our Future Water Security." The 3rd AIWW was jointly hosted by AWC and the Ministry of Water Resources (MWR) of China and lead-organized by the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR). Nearly 1,300 water sector professionals from 68 countries and regions, along with representatives from over 20 international organizations and water-related institutions, participated in the event. Li Guoying, China’s Minister of Water Resources, delivered the keynote speech at the opening ceremony, which was presided over by Li Liangsheng, Vice Minister of Water Resources. Professor Liu Junguo, President of North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power (NCWU), was invited to participate in the series of events held during the 3rd AIWW.

On the morning of September 24, the opening ceremony of the 3rd AIWW took place in Beijing. The opening ceremony was attended and addressed by Li Guoying, China's Minister of Water Resources, Li Liangsheng, Vice Minister of Water Resources, Yun Seog-dae, Chairman of AWC, Loïc Fauchon, President of the World Water Council, and Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in China. In Li Guoying's keynote address, he stressed that managing water resources and addressing water-related hazards have always been pivotal to national stability and governance. He affirmed that the Ministry of Water Resources (MWR) of China, driven by comprehensive reform, will continue to collaborate with other nations and international organizations through initiatives such as the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. This joint effort aims to enhance our future water security and contribute to achieving the water-related goals of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, while advancing global water governance to foster the community of common destiny.

On the afternoon of September 24, President Liu Junguo was invited to participate in a high-level roundtable on the forefront of water science and technology. He presented the latest research findings and technological breakthroughs in the field of water resources, including insights into river seasonal variability, the human-water relationship, and 3D water scarcity. He also engaged in discussions to facilitate the compilation and publication of UNESCO's World Water Science Report.

On the morning of September 25, Liu Junguo chaired a side event organized by NCWU titled The Impact of Climate Change on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus. Experts and professors from institutions including Peking University, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Aalto University, the Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute, the Stockholm Environment Institute, and the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation presented insightful speeches and engaged in a dynamic discussion on the event's theme.

Throughout the event, Liu Junguo was also invited to participate in a series of significant sessions and side events. These included the 40th anniversary of the International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation (IRTCES) and Global Symposium on Soil Erosion, the EU-China Water Cooperation Project: Resilience Strategies for Cities and Watersheds in Extreme Weather Conditions, the Emerging Technologies and Governance of the Water-Energy-Food Nexus, and the 10th EU-China Water Resources Exchange Platform High-Level Dialogue. During these events, he introduced strategies for managing the water-energy-food-carbon nexus, explored technological prospects for EU-China water cooperation, and discussed urban resilience in the face of extreme weather conditions. He emphasized the importance of a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, advocating for gradual ecological restoration and the integration of blue, green, and grey infrastructure.

Participation in the 3rd Asia International Water Week significantly advanced NCWU's commitment to President Xi Jinping's water governance strategy, which emphasizes prioritizing water conservation, balancing water resource distribution, systematic governance, and mobilizing both government and market forces. The event also strengthened the university's international educational and research efforts, as well as its cultural exchanges and talent cultivation initiatives.

Representatives from the university’s Office of Science and Technology, School of Water Resources, School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Yellow River Institute of Science, and the Institute for Water Governance in the New Era (Water Culture Research Center) participated in the above events.
