On the afternoon of January 15th, the Opening Ceremony of Serial Academic Activities to Implement the Yellow River National Strategy & the Symposium of 'Academician's Discussion on the Yellow River’ was held atourLongzihu Lake Campus. Yao Tandong, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Wang Fuming, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering were invited to give academic reports. Secretaryof the Party Committeeof the university, Wang Dubo, delivered a speech, and President, Liu Junguo, presided over the meeting. Vice President,Liu Xuemei,also attended the event.
On behalf of the university, Wang Dubo expressed a warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to Academicians Yao Tandong and Wang Fuming for their presence and extended his enthusiastic congratulations on the opening of the serial academic activities to implement the Yellow River National Strategy. He pointed out that the Yellow River National Strategy outlined and promoted by General Secretary, Xi Jinping, provides guidance for the tranquility of the river basin, ecological protection, conservation and intensive use of water resources, high-quality economic and social development, as well as the protection, inheritance, and innovative development of the Yellow River culture. This strategy also clarifies the research direction for a vast number of scientific and technological workers. As a university with distinctive water conservancy characteristics in the Yellow River basin, researching and addressing the issues of the Yellow River is our responsibility and mission. At present, the creation of 'Double First-Class' in the field of water conservancy engineering is our key task and top priority. The 'Academician's Discussion on the Yellow River' Symposium is the first event of the serial academic activities to implement the Yellow River National Strategy. This Symposium provides a rare opportunity to fully absorb and draw on new concepts, methods, and technologies at the forefront of academia from various experts, which is beneficial for us to further advance the 'Double First-Class' initiative. We will take the opportunity of hosting this event to strive for strong alliances in the fields of core technology and practical application,so as tofurther deepen the profound development of our university, add 'new momentum' to our 'Double First-Class' initiative, and make new and greater contributions to the high-quality development of water conservancy.
Liu Junguo pointed out that, on September 18, 2019, General Secretary, Xi Jinping, chaired and convened a symposium on ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin in Zhengzhou, Henan, and delivered an important speech,wherethe ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basinwasofficially elevatedto a national strategy. Today, on the 5th anniversary of the General Secretary's important speech,ouruniversity held the opening ceremony for the 'Serial Academic Activities to Implement the Yellow River National Strategy', aiming to actively integrate into the Yellow River National Strategy and make due contribution to the high-quality development of water conservancy. The serial activities will include various forms such as academic reports, academic forums, and international conferences. It is planned to hold events every month in 2024, with the 7th International Ecological Summit to be held in December as the grand finale event. As a summit of academia, the 'Academician's Discussion on the Yellow River' symposium is the first event, and we are honored to have invited Professor Yao Tandong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Wang Fuming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, to give presentations. We hope that teachers and students will stay true to their original aspirations and work together, to make contributionsto the 'Double First-Class' initiative ofouruniversity's water conservancy engineering discipline and to the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin.
Academicians Yao Tandong and Wang Fuming, along with Secretaryof thePartyCommittee of the universityWang Dubo, President Liu Junguo, and Vice President Liu Xuemei, jointly started the Serial Academic Activities to Implement the Yellow River National Strategy.
Academician Yao Tandong of the Chinese Academy of Sciences delivered an academic report titled "Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition". Academician Yao Tandong, around the Climbing Path from Utilization to Protection of the Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition, introduced the scientific exploration and heritage of the Tibetan Plateau scientific expedition and elaborated on the national strategy and positioning of the Tibetan Plateau scientific expedition, with a focus on reviewing the 10 major advancements of the second Tibetan Plateau scientific expedition. He pointed out that the changes in the Tibetan Plateau and the linkage with the polar regions impact the global environment, and as the most important water tower and climate change driver globally, the Tibetan Plateau is closely related to the global ecological environment and the human community with a shared future. The five stages of the Tibetan Plateau scientific expedition have accumulated a wealth of scientific data and have had a significant impact on both scientific and societal levels. Academician Yao explained that the second Tibetan Plateau scientific expedition has clarified the changes and impacts of the "Asian Water Tower", unveiled the carbon sequestration functions and potential of the ecosystem, elucidated the characteristics and impacts of the imbalance of the Asian Water Tower under the influence of climate change, proposed adaptation models for human survival in the plateau environment, formed a national think tank for the construction of ecological civilization in the Tibetan Plateau, achieved new breakthroughs in the scientific research of the Earth System Science in the Tibetan Plateau, and generated extensive social effects.
Professor Wang Fuming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a report titled "The Progress in the Construction of the Yellow River Laboratory and Its Pilot Base". Heintroduced the construction progress of the Yellow River Laboratory, and noted that the Laboratory aims to gather a group of top-tier research and development teams to achieve a series of original and iconic innovative outcomes and to build a world-class cluster of basic disciplines. He also pointed out that the Laboratory should comprehensively enhance the technical support capabilities for water safety in the Yellow River basin and Henan Province,to provide scientific and technological support for the advancement of the "Five Waters Comprehensive Reform" and the "Four Waters Joint Governance", and additionally,toseek to establish a comprehensive and integrated scientific and technological innovation consortium with distinctive features of the Yellow River basin and Henan to strive to become a strategic scientific and technological force at the national level. Academician Wang highlighted the construction progress of the Dam Engineering Hospital and the outstanding achievements made in the integration of industry, academia and education. He pointed out that the establishment of the Engineering Hospital brings together the educational, research and training resources of universities and research institutes related to thesamefield, which has significant practical importance in serving social needs, supporting scientific and technological innovation, nurturing new industries, advancing science popularization, and exploring the cultivation model of "advanced civil engineering” talents.
Academicians Yao Tandong and Wang Fuming delivered reports that were both engaging and humorous, with profound yet accessible insights. Their presentations were highly infectious and received enthusiastic applause, and they exemplified the broad prospects of scientific and technological innovation in supporting national strategies. Secretary Wang Dubo, on behalf of the university, presented certificates of honor and expressed heartfelt gratitude to both academicians for their splendid presentations.
