The School of Civil Engineering and Communication, formerly known as Faculty of Civil Engineering and Communication, was established in 1988. The School has 7 undergraduate majors: Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Inorganic Non-metallic Materials Engineering，Building Environment and Energy Engineering, Resource Recycling Science and Engineering as well as Road Bridge and River-Crossing Engineering. In addition, a three-year diploma project on architecture engineering started in 2006 via co-operation with Swinburne University in Australia and has the qualification of the undergraduate self-learning test. Disciplines of Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering and Engineering Physics are ranked as a “Special Discipline”within Henan Province. The discipline of Civil Engineering enjoys a history of more than 30 years, which passed the accreditations of the Ministry of Construction in 2007 and 2012, and has been built into a first-class discipline in Henan Province. The School now has Disaster Prevention and Reduction Engineering Academician Station of Henan Province, the Provincial First-level Key Discipline, and the professional master degree granting qualification of Construction and Civil Engineering. It can confer master's degrees in the following 7 disciplines: Structure Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Municipal Engineering, Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, Disaster Prevention & Mitigation and Protection Engineering, Civil Engineering Construction & Management as well as Underground Engineering. The School could recommend and accept graduate students without entrance examinations as well as enroll equivalent educational level master and engineering master applicants.
The School currently has 113 full-time teachers and a double employed academician. Among the full-time staff, 47 hold a professor or assistant professor title and 47 own a doctoral degree. In addition, there are four study-aboard teachers who were selected by China Scholarship Council, 1 provincial Distinguished Professor, 2 Distinguished Professors of NCWU, 2 provincial Excellent Specialists, 4 teachers with the title of “Excel in Teaching” of NCWU, 2 provincial Excellent Innovation Talents, 1 Zhengzhou Leading Talent of Scientist and Technology, 3 Henan Youth Scientist Award winners, 1 Henan Outstanding Youth Scientist Fund winner, 4 Youth Backbone College Teachers and 2 excellent directors of master dissertation at provincial level.
The School has always focused on teaching and talent nurturing and has built the teaching team of Henan Civil Engineering Structural Courses and Provincial Excellent Courses including Concrete Structure, Building Materials and Mechanics of Material as well Henan Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center on Practice of Civil Engineering. In the last 5 years, the teaching staff edited 32 universal textbooks, and won 2 provincial higher education achievement first prizes and 1 second prize as well as the Excellent Book of Henan Province.
The School attaches importance to the transformation from scientific research achievements to teaching, establishing the Civil Communication Scientific Research Center, Henan Provincial Scientific Innovation Team of Hydraulic Structures Durability, Henan Universities’ Science Innovation Team of Eco-building Materials and Structural Engineering, the Tarining Base of Key Laboratory of Eco High-performance Building Materials in the universities of Henan Province, Henan Provincial Key Disciplines Opening Laboratory of Hydraulic Structure and Materials Engineering as well as Vocational School Talents Training Center of Henan Provincial Industrial and Civil Architecture. Since 2000, the School has completed nearly 90 scientific research projects entrusted by the National Fund of Natural Science, Funds of Excellent Young Scientists in Henan Province, Creative Talents in the Universities of Henan Province, Visiting Scholars supported by CSC, Fund of the State Key Laboratory, published 18 academic monographs, and won 26 awards in scientific advancements at the provincial and ministry level.
The Engineering Detection Center of the School (named as Henan Hua Shui Engineering Quality Detection Co.Ltd.) authorized by the state in 2000 and its detection qualification covers 19 categories altogether 200 parameters including the materials quality, installment quality, engineering measurement and monitoring.
