The School of Resource & Environment, formerly known as Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering, started to recruit students from 1958. In 2006, the School of Resource & Environment was established. Since its foundation, the School has been devoted to the perfection of this discipline system, laid emphasis on cultivating interdisciplinary talents in rock and soil engineering and attached importance to teaching quality. The School also stresses the integration of teaching and scientific research, theories and practices, thus actively opening itself to international exchanges, scientific research and engineering projects in extensive areas, which are ranging from water conservation, hydroelectric power, electric engineering, transportation, urban construction to national defense.

The School of Resource & Environment is well-staffed with 143 faculty members, among whom 1 is the Academician of China National Engineering Research Institute, 16 professors, 48 associate professors and 76 have doctorate degrees; 2 are entitled to the Special Government Allowances from the State Council in China, 1 Outstanding Expert at the provincial level and 1 Excellent Renowned Teacher in Henan Province. The school has formed a teaching and research team that are innovative, enterprising, qualified and reasonably structured. The School currently has 5 departments: Geological Engineering Department, Underground Space Engineering Department, Urban and Rural Planning Department, Geographical Information Science Department, and Surveying and Mapping Engineering Department.

The School of Resource & Environment is strong with modern research facilities. There is 1 Key Laboratory in Henan Province:“Geotechnical Mechanics and Structural Engineering” Laboratory and 3 teaching and research laboratories, such as, the experimental research center of Geological Engineering, Geological Engineering Comprehensive Laboratory as well as Mapping and Spatial Information of Experimental Center. The School possesses 8 research institutes including the Institute of Geological Engineering, the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering, the Institute of Resources, Environment and Planning, the Institute of Development and application of 3S Technology, the Institute of Geophysical Survey, the Institute of Underground Water Development and Utilization, the Institute of Water and Soil Conservation and the Institute of Urban and Rural Planning.

The School of Resource & Environment has 6 undergraduate disciplines: Geological Engineering, Geological Engineering (Geophysical Prospecting Direction), Civil Engineering, Human Geography and Urban and Rural Planning, Geographical Information System, Surveying and Mapping Engineering, as well as Water Conservation and Protection against Desertification. The following 5 disciplines of the School are authorized to confer master degrees: Geology Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Earth Survey and Information Technology, Mine Survey and Exploration, Environmental Engineering as well as Soil & Water Conservation and Desert Prevention. There is 1 Class A PhD Authorized Key Discipline: Geological Resource and Geological Engineering. From all of the disciplines mentioned above, Geological Resource and Geological Engineering and Forestry are the Key Disciplines in Henan Province. In 2005, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering obtained the authority to confer Master’s Degrees and meanwhile, the School of Resource & Environment is in hold of the authority to enroll the postgraduate students with exams offered by the school and the authority to confer an equal degree to Master’s Degree as well as the authority to confer the Master’s Degree of Geological Engineering.

Since its establishment, the School of Resource & Environment has produced more than 6000 undergraduate and junior college students, more than 500 correspondence students, more than 300 postgraduate students and 6 PhD students in joint education programs. Presently, the School of Resource & Environment has more than 1600 undergraduate students and more than 100 postgraduate and PhD students in total. Graduates widely win a reputation and favorable comments from the employers, the employment rates have been exceeding 98.90% in the last consecutive 10 years.
