《英语读写译》课程思政案例

一、课程教学目标

本课程教学目标为四个维度:一为语言能力,帮助学生打下扎实的语言基础,培养其英语语言运用能力,使学生具有较强的阅读能力和翻译写作能力;二为跨文化交际能力,增强学生的跨文化交际意识和交际能力;三为思辨能力,培养学生批判性思维方式,提高创新力;四为人文能力,提高学生综合人文素养。在这样的教学目标定位下,本课程的授课理念为:注重实践,以学生为中心,提高学生语言表达能力,跨文化交际能力,思辨人文能力。


二、思政育人目标

坚持用习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想育人,在教学中,培育和践行社会主义核心价值观,引导学生熟悉世情国情党情民情,具备国际视野,培养学生无私奉献、诚实守信、开拓创新的良好品格以及家国情怀,加强中华优秀传统文化教育,树立四个自信。培养学生成为有坚定理想信念,身怀爱国之心、报国之志,有担当,有责任心,肯钻研,作风好的高素质复合型人才。


三、课程思政典型教学案例设计

案例一:Book 1 Unit 1 从大学校训看中西文化差异

(一)育人目标及思政元素

育人目标:1. 体会文化特征及价值取向,体会中西文化的不同之处;2.对比分析中西文化差异,培养思辨跨文化能力。

思政元素:1.四书五经的英语翻译;2.传统儒家文化。

(二)教学设计

Part I  Lead-in 把中国传统文化融入单元主题

提前布置小组任务,找出中西著名大学的校训及其中英对照,以及校训的出处。引导学生思考校训背后体现出的深厚文化背景。

The school motto represents the spirit of the university and highlights the university's educational philosophy and goals. Please search for both the Chinese and English versions of mottos and find out the origin of these mottos.

China: 

1. The school motto of Fudan University 

“博学而笃志 切问而近思” is a sentence from The Analects of Confucius, emphasizing the uprightness of learning attitude, perseverance and diligent at thinking.

2. The motto of Xiamen University 

“自强不息 止于至善” is also from an ancient text. “自强不息” comes from “天行健,君子以自强不息” in The Book of Changes while “止于至善” comes from “大学之道,在明明德,在亲民,在止于至善” in The Great Learning. “Great learning aims to foster moral integrity, forge close ties with the people and attain consummate virtue in both words and deeds.” The virtue and knowledge are the main goals pursued by Chinese universities.

3. Cultural notes:

四书:《大学》、《中庸》、《论语》、《孟子》

The Four Books: The Great Learning, The Doctrine of the Mean, The Confucian Analects, and The Works of Mencius

五经:《诗经》、《尚书》、《易经》、《礼记》、《春秋》

The Five Classics: The Book of Poetry / Songs, The Book of History, The Book of Changes, The Book of Rites, and The Spring and Autumn Annals  

West:

1.Columbia University

“借汝之光,得见光明” comes from the Old Testament .Meaning: For with thee is the fountain of life; and in thy light we shall see light.

2.University of Oxford

“耶和华是我的亮光” comes from the Old Testament . Meaning: The Lord is my light.

Part II  Group Discussion 把思辨融入小组讨论

Q&A 中国大学校训的共同点及其体现出的文化内涵和价值取向。

According to the research, do you think that most mottos of Chinese universities have the same focus? Please have a discussion to find out the similarities of Chinese university mottos' contents and characteristics.

Reference: It can be found that the mottos of Chinese universities are generally preferential towards the education of people’s ideological and moral values and the pursuit of persistence and wisdom.  

The main content of the Chinese university mottos is to encourage students to study hard and pursue knowledge; to be independent in spirits and get self-improvement; to be good at thinking and to improve morality in life.

In addition, those mottos encourage students to be broad-minded and adept at accepting, putting the national and collective honors first and keeping the dedication to mind.

On the whole, the mottos of Chinese universities mainly show demands and hopes for people in several aspects such as morality, quality, learning attitude and philosophy of dealing with things. This is inseparable from the traditional Chinese Confucianism education.

中国大学校训的主要内容是鼓励学生努力学习和追求知识,自我完善,善于思考,鼓励学生将民族和集体的荣誉放在首位。主要表现出对人们在多个方面的需求和希望,例如道德,学习态度和处理事物的哲学。这与中国传统的儒家教育是密不可分的。

Part III  Study 把跨文化能力融入课堂教学

从大学校训看中西文化及价值观的差异,学会应用对比分析法并培养思辨跨文化能力。

A Cross-Cultural Contrast Study on the University Mottoes of China and Western Countries

The spirit of Chinese university mottoes is rooted in Confucius thoughts, with "morality" as the core, learning as the way, and serving the country as its own duty.

Christianity gave birth to the universities, and the core of the spirit is "seeking knowledge and freedom", which pays attention to advocating truth and pursuing academic freedom.

Exploring the differences between the two is conducive to enhancing mutual understanding between Chinese and Western universities, and is of great significance to the construction of Chinese colleges and universities in the new era, which should not only learn the advanced western school running ideas, but also maintain Chinese characteristics.

总结对比分析,用中西大学校训的例子帮助学生理解背后体现出的中西文化对比,并探索两者之间的差异,这有利于增进中国大学和西方大学之间的相互理解,并且对新时代的中国大学建设具有重要意义,我们在学习西方思想的同时更应该保持中国特色,树立我们自己的文化自信。

Part IV Assignment 把思政融入课后任务

通过对比分析探讨中西文化差异及中国传统文化的特色,并布置课下任务以本课内容为主题用对比分析法写作文。

There are two basic methods to organize the body of a contrast essay. One is the “point-by-point” or “alternating” method. The other is the “subject-by-subject” pattern, also referred to as the “side-by-side” or the “block” pattern.


案例二:Book 2 Unit 4 爱之面面观

(一)育人目标及思政元素

育人目标:1. 探讨对于爱情的认识,引导大学生树立正确的爱情观;2.思考爱的多种形式,由小爱上升到大爱,培养家国情怀,国际视野。

思政元素:1. 中国传统古诗词的英语翻译;2.习近平主席语录“大爱无疆”。

(二)教学设计

Part I  Lead-in 把中国传统文化以及习主席语录融入单元主题并融入社会现实

Section One: Group Discussion 观看视频,小组讨论问题

Do you think that there are many kinds of love ?

Think about the related famous poems or proverbs.

Reference: Four types of love — familial love; friendship; romantic love & love for humankind (亲情、友情、爱情以及人间大爱)

Section Two: Appreciation 中国传统古诗词的英语翻译

Familial Love: Filial piety is the most important of all virtues. 百善孝为先。

Friendship: 海内存知己,天涯若比邻。A bosom friend afar brings a distant land near.

Romantic love: 死生契阔, 与子成说。 执子之手, 与子偕老。 ——《诗经》

Universal Love for Humankind:

He should over flow in love to all, and cultivate the friendship of the good.

Section Three: Power of Love in the Time of Corona virus 抗疫期间展现的人间大爱

从博爱仁爱引入中国抗击疫情的现实思政元素,习近平主席提出的“敬佑生命、救死扶伤、甘于奉献、大爱无疆“,我们在抗疫期间体现出的人间大爱以及中国援助他国体现出的国际情怀,深刻反映了总书记构建人类命运共同体的伟大思想。

Section Four: Translation 把思政融入课堂翻译练习 

一百多支医疗队、两万多名医护人员从全国各地向湖北集结支援疫情防控,他们被誉为当代“最美逆行者”。所有医护人员夜以继日抗击疫情,冒着被感染的危险拯救病人的生命,展现了人间大爱。

Hailed as heroes in harm’s way, over 20,000 healthcare workers in 100 plus medical teams converged in Hubei from across the nation to support epidemic control. All medical workers are saving and protecting lives around the clock despite the risk of infection, exemplifying what great love is.

Part II  Language Focus 把思政融入语言学习

1. behalf (Para. 7) on one’s ~ / on ~ of sb

On behalf of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, I will now deliver a report to the 19th National Congress.

2. bloom (Para. 11)

We should follow the principle of letting a hundred flowers bloom and a hundred schools of thought contend, and encourage creative transformation and development, so as to add new luster to Chinese culture.

Part III  Text Study 把价值引领人格塑造融入教学思辨

Q&A:紧扣课本,深挖教材,进行有针对性问答设计,让学生展开思辨,培养思辨能力,塑造正确价值观。

1.That fateful night, I was merely curious, but for him I think it was love at first sight.  I needed a boyfriend. Not just any boyfriend. He had to be cute. My goal that semester became: be ambitious and grab the cutest boyfriend I can find.(paras 2&3)

Questions: Do looks Matter That Much? How do you understand the proverb “never judge a book by its cover”?

Reference: The attractiveness of physical looks changes overtime. While good looks help with initial impression, its value levels off very quickly and becomes much less important over the long term while other factors increase. Building attraction is more important than appearance.

It is not wise to judge a person by his/ her appearance because appearance is superficial. Sometimes the appearance of a person may mislead your judgment when it does not match well with the inner part of that person.

此问题旨在启发学生思考外貌的作用以及不要“以貌取人“的原因,引导树立正确的价值理念取向。外表的吸引力会随着时间推移而改变,虽然漂亮的外表有助于给人留下最初的印象,但从长远看,内在吸引力比外表更重要。以貌取人更是不明智不可取的。

2. But the truth is we had a pure and responsible relationship for seven full years. Sitting by the palm trees, hand in hand, we would listen to romantic songs, watch the sunset, and weave dreams of being together with children of our own, forever.(paras 7&8)

Questions: What is a healthy college love affair?

Reference: Being in love can make college sweethearts feel more motivated in academic life, because both of them can encourage and inspire each other. A healthy relationship helps two people grow. I think students should hold a healthy attitude towards relationships and understand the real concept of love. The most perfect campus love is to work together, make progress together, get through the ups and downs, and achieve academic success.      

此问题旨在启发学生思考什么样的关系才是健康的爱情关系以及如何正确对待爱情,引导树立正确爱情观。科学的恋爱,健康的关系会帮助两个人成长。学生应该持健康的态度,理解真正的爱情概念。最好的校园爱情要一起努力,一起进步。

案例三:Book 3 Unit 5 工作的意义

(一)育人目标及思政元素

育人目标:1. 探讨对于工作的认识,引导大学生树立终身学习的价值观;2. 思考工作的意思,如何找到对社会有益并能实现自我价值的工作 。

思政元素:1.终身学习的重要性 ;2.社会主义核心价值观-敬业 。

(二)教学设计

Part I  Lead-in 把社会主义核心价值观融入单元主题并融入社会现实

Discussion 探讨对于工作的认识

What does work mean to you? When you choose a life career, what will you consider as most important? Why?

Core Socialist Values---敬业(dedication)

One can only work for a limited period of time, but there is no limit to serving the people with dedication.

1. What is necessary labor from the point of view of society is voluntary play from the individual's personal point of view. (Para. 3)

Questions: Why does the author make a comparison between a gardener and a well-dressed city mayor?

Reference: The author wants to show that the difference

between workers and laborers does not lie in the nature of the job itself, be it mental or manual, of low or high esteem, but in whether a person has an interest in his job.

启发学生讨论工作者和劳役者之间的区别,两者的区别不在于工作的性质本身,而是在于一个人是否对自己的工作感兴趣。引导学生思考找工作要素,要重点考虑的原则绝非金钱地位,而是个人的热爱与激情,树立正确的工作价值观。

2. Workers who enjoy their jobs will be happier, less stressed, and generally more satisfied with their lives. They will also work with more diligence and precision because they have fostered a sense of personal pride in their jobs.(para. 5)

Questions: What do you think are the factors that contribute to a person’s pride in his work?

Reference: Why should work be such a significant source of human satisfaction? A good share of the answer rests in the kind of pride that is stimulated by the job, by the activity of accomplishing.

工作者喜欢自己的工作,感觉更快乐,更轻松,通常对自己的生活更满意。他们工作起来也会更勤奋。此问题引导学生思考为什么工作竟然是人们获得满足的如此重要的源泉,最主要的答案就在于,工作和通过工作所取得的成就,能激起一种自豪感,可以带来自信,认同,自我提升。

3.How to understand famous saying – the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

Following one’s passion in work is very important. One can relate more to the work and come up with better ideas. One will not feel that he or she is forced to work. One will get a sense of fulfillment when he or she finally makes it. No obstacle will stop him or her from achieving success.

此问题旨在引导学生思考名言:成就伟业的唯一途径就是热爱自己从事的事业,引导讨论如何把个人的兴趣爱好与社会价值相统一,投入到为人民服务的事业当中,树立社会主义核心价值观。

Part IV Assignment 把思政融入课后作业

Write an essay entitled How can a person foster love for his work? You should write at least 120 words but no more than 150 words.


四、课程思政实施成效及学生反馈

实施成效:提高了学生的英语语言应用能力、思辨能力和跨文化交际能力;在语言学习的同时,通过中西文化对比,引导学生用不同的角度看待文化差异,从而提高学生的跨文化交际意识及思辨能力,创新精神和独立精神,同时增强文化自信,强化爱国意识,使学生保持强烈的民族自豪感。创设思政语境,适时融入中国元素,充分剖析中华传统文化的精髓,深刻领会我们党治国理政的思想,夯实同学们“四个自信”的底气,实现语言思政相融合,知识能力相融合,经典时代相融合,课本现实相融合,本土国际相融合。从而达到知识传授,能力培养和价值塑造三位一体的教学目标。

学生反馈:上课时,余老师能够从学生实际出发,适当缓和课堂气氛,充分调动学生学习的积极性,使学生在学习之余能够在调节气氛的过程中学习做人的道理,帮助我们形成正确的价值观以及世界观。在英语课堂上,老师十分重视同学们自主、合作、探究三大主要学习方式的运用,和可持续发展、终身学习、自主发展、自我选择的方法和能力的培养。余老师在培养我们英语语言的同时,也注重引导我们对中国文化的再学习。余老师在英语课程中融入了社会主义核心价值观和中华优秀传统文化,努力引导我们树立正确的世界观、人生观和价值观。同时通过文化对比和案例分析,也培养了我们的跨文化交际能力。使我们更好的适应时代发展的需要和满足个人的发展需要,我想这就是这门课程带给我最大的体会和理解。(202004104 刘垚)
